Men's basketball: D-II Rollins stuns UWGB

Press-Gazette • November 22, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — This hadn't happened since Tod Kowalczyk's first game as the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball coach.

Not since Nov. 21, 2002 had the Phoenix lost to a Division II team. That day, the opponent was Alaska-Fairbanks. On Friday, it was Rollins College that knocked off UWGB 75-58 in the second round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic.

The loss came three days after the Phoenix lost by 19 points in the season opener at Utah. At least UWGB (0-2) was in the game against the Utes. This time, it was over shortly after it started. The Tars (3-0) scored the first seven points and boosted their lead to double digits with 7 minutes left in the first half. That lead ballooned to 20 points with 2 minutes left in the first half and was a comfortable 14 at the break.

The Tars led by as many as 22 with 12:16 remaining before the Phoenix made a last-ditch effort to get back in the game. Junior guard Troy Cotton scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, and junior forward Chop Tang (seven points) hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 56-47 with 6:14 remaining, but the Phoenix could not get any closer.

"I don't care what division they play in, they're a very good basketball team," Kowalczyk said.

Rollins, from nearby Winter Park, Fla., ran a Princeton-style offense and played exclusively zone defense. Both gave the Phoenix problems.

The Tars got high-percentage shots on back cuts, which opened up their 3-point shooting. They shot 81 percent (13-for-16) in the second half and 60 percent for the game.

"How we're defending — getting out and being aggressive and getting in the passing lanes — is exactly the wrong way to play against Rollins," Kowalczyk said. "We talked to our guys about adjusting, but it took them too long to adjust."

Northern Illinois transfer Zachary Pancratz led four Rollins players in double figures with 15 points.

UWGB shot just 28 percent in the first half and 31 percent overall. Ten of their 13 turnovers came in the first half, and senior guard Terry Evans had six of the giveaways. Evans, who scored a game-high 15 points against Utah, managed just three points on 1-for-7 shooting.

Cotton was the only Phoenix player to score in double figures. He also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

UWGB plays two more games in this event — today against Marshall at 1 p.m., and Sunday against Morgan State (which beat Marshall on Friday).
